How to look up a license

Pick the state
Choose the state that gave out the license. A license only shows up under its own state.

Type the license number or a name
Use the number if you have it. No number? Type a last name or a full name. You can also use both.

Read the result
Each match shows the name, the license type, the number, and if it is active or expired. A name search shows up to 25 matches.

Why check a nail license?: Every nail tech who works on clients needs an active license from the state cosmetology board. A license means the tech met the state's training and cleaning rules. Checking it tells you the person doing your nails is allowed to do the work.
What do active and expired mean?: Active means the license is current. Expired means the tech has not renewed yet. They may be between renewals, but they are not cleared to work until they renew. We work out the status from the end date the board publishes.
Which states can I check?: Right now you can check licenses in Texas and California. The records come from each state's cosmetology board. We add more states as their records become available.
What if there is no match?: Check the number and the state first. State boards only list the licenses they gave out. So a missing record can mean that state never gave out this license.
