From Makeup Goals to Nail Art Brilliance
Q: Can you tell us about your journey to becoming a nail artist? What inspired you to enter this field?
Growing up, I was always interested in the beauty industry. I loved makeup and anything to do with beauty and self-care.
After finishing high school, I went straight to cosmetology school, thinking that my career would be makeup-based. I thought I would end up being an MUA. While I was in cosmetology school, I decided to give nails a try and ended up falling in love.
I automatically knew that this was something I was interested in doing; it felt as if it came naturally, and I haven’t stopped ever since.
Q: What are your favorite nail art trends currently, and how do you incorporate them into your work?
My current favorite nail trend has to be 3-D nail art in general, specifically the French manicure with 3-D lines outlining the sides of the French.
However, my favorite kind of nail designs to do are probably anything handpainted, whether it be characters or flowers—anything involving painting.
Q: How do you stay inspired and keep your creativity flowing?
My favorite way to stay inspired and keep creativity flowing is to go out of my comfort zone and try new things. There are constantly different trends, especially in the nail world, so it’s always nice to give something different a try so it doesn’t feel like you’re stuck doing the same thing over and over.
Q: Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a new nail look?
Whenever I’m designing a new nail look, whether it be a freestyle I’m doing on a client or just a new design I want to try, I always make sure that everything is cohesive.
I think it’s important to have an idea of what kind of look you’re going for and to let your creativity flow from there.
Q: What has been the most challenging aspect of your career as a nail artist, and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging aspect of my career as a nail artist was definitely the social media side of it.
I love doing nails—I can do them all day every day—but with that comes being your own photographer, your own videographer, having to consistently make content for social media platforms, replying to messages, replying to comments, and interacting with brand deals, just to name a few things.
I have to keep myself on schedule. I’m still working on getting the hang of it because it’s impossible, but whenever I do take time to have content days, I try to film and photograph as many designs as possible.
It’s still a work in progress, but I’ve definitely made a point to make it easier for myself.
Q: What are your top tips for someone who wants to maintain healthy, stylish nails?
For people who would like to maintain healthy, stylish nails, even with getting acrylics, I suggest soaking off all enhancements to give your nails a break instead of having them forcibly removed.
No ripping off your nails! Moisturize your hands and use cuticle oil regularly.
Q: How do you think social media has changed the nail art industry, and how has it impacted your career?
Social media has changed the nail art industry tremendously. It is an amazing tool that helps keep up with trends.
It’s an amazing tool for any business owner, especially anyone who works in the nail art industry. It’s where I’ve made my career and where I continue to get more clients from.
You are able to engage and interact with so many people and businesses. It’s where I’ve also made many business relationships. Some brands that I’ve worked with have helped put my name out there along with many other amazing brands.
It’s the biggest tool that any business owner can use!
Q: What’s your most memorable client experience or project, and what made it so special?
My most memorable client was a woman who came to me when I first started nails. We met through Instagram.
She was amazing—showed up to all her appointments on time, she was the perfect client and an amazing person. It was during COVID, and she always took the most precautions to make sure that she was able to see me and keep herself safe.
She always supported me, always commented on my pictures or posts. She was my regular for two years straight and then, sadly, passed away. I constantly think about her and the love she showed me.
I just hope she knew that it was completely reciprocated and her memory is well and living in my heart.
Q: How do you plan to evolve your work and brand in the coming years? What’s next for you?
What I think I would like to focus on next in my career is the social media aspect of it. I think it is an amazing tool when used correctly, and it has so much to offer for business owners.
I want to take advantage of every part of it that I can. I will hopefully get more opportunities from it and continue to grow.
Q: Lastly, for all the aspiring nail artists out there, what advice would you give to those just starting their journey?
For any aspiring nail artist, the best piece of advice I would give is to not give up.
Everything is difficult at the beginning, but as long as you put in the effort and take the time to practice and perfect your craft, it will pay off. This is an amazing career that opens so many doors and allows you to meet so many people.
It is worth every hour of effort and work you put into it. Don’t get discouraged if things aren’t going as fast or as easily as you thought they would. It’s important to love and have a passion for what you do!
